Abstract

The ecuadorian Departament of Education has proposed a “Reading Festival”, the objective is to motivate and promote the habit of reading in students as part of their education. At the school Unidad Educativa Zoila Aurora Palacios in the city of Cuenca, a “Poetic Party” was proposed, and ninth and tenth grade students participated. The purpose of the activity was to invite the student body to read works by Latin American authors such as:  Gabriel García Márquez, Mario Benedetti, Frida Kahlo and Gabriela Mistral, who are referents of Latin American written work. This topic was chosen in order to place students closer to simple, sensible and subtle literature in a dynamic and participatory way. The activity consisted in working with the biography, works and phrases by the previously mentioned authors. With the authors’ phrases, denotative and connotative reading was reinforced, as well as literary resources; all of which were focused on practice and its use in every day life.
